Firmly Planted (mixed media)

Firmly Planted (mixed media)

There was a lovely portrait on the front of a recent National Geographic. So, I drew her (my hand work is terrible–need to work on that!) and added a potted plant, because I have been looking at a lot of Hope Gangloff lately, and it made me think of props in her wonderful portraits.

Meet “Autumn” (digital drawing)

Meet “Autumn” (digital drawing)

A quick drawing of the day, which I really enjoyed doing. I felt like working on a portrait but also felt like working on something that felt like Autumn. All those lovely Fall colors and I wanted to feature them. I decided to include all of those elements in one drawing. I like this theme so well, I’m going to continue making various flavors of “Autumn” and even begin working on the other seasons of the year. Winter! Spring! Summer!

Pink Maple – Coloring Digitally

Pink Maple – Coloring Digitally

I felt like I needed some bright colors in my life today. I went back through the daily sketch archives and found a portrait to experiment with. My thought being, “Why not add some color digitally? Let’s see what happens.” I am super encouraged by this short, fun coloring! Pink seemed the way to go, and so, go with it, I did!

The graphite drawing was taken from Day 16 of Daily Portrait Sketches.
Below is the newly-colored “Pink Maple”. What do think of her color infusion?

Day 7 – Girl, digital sketch (pink)

Day 7 – Girl, digital sketch (pink)

Day Seven - Uncolored

I played with hatching today, and so some very generic lines. I spent about twenty minutes on her. I hope to develop her in the future. She is a digital drawing using Sketchbook Pro.

Day Seven - Colored

The same drawing as above, but with some tiny amounts of color for fun.

I hope tomorrow continues progressively — it will be Day 8! Whoo hoo!

ABOUT THIS PICTURE

Digital art. This is a modification of a hand-drawn portrait I made months ago called SamanthaI’ve been submitting to a lot of literary magazines lately, and have been noting some fantastic cover art.

Looking back at my own work, and manipulating some colors in this (originally graphite) picture, I saw a lot of fun possibilities. Go ahead and make a simple sketch of your own, and take a picture of it. Drop it into Sketchbook Pro, Photoshop, or Illustrator — I bet you’ll come up with more artistic uniqueness that you ever thought!

I like the strong yellow. I like the loud colors. I like those color qualities against the softness of the female portrait. I enjoyed playing with this. Give your own artwork a digital-color try — and share them, of course!

Keep being great, lots of hugs,
Penney
