  • Desk Rose Practicing with some workflow concepts—changing from paper to digital. I made a simple drawing of a rose and some sage leaves that I had on my desk. I liked the layout and the composition. I kept wanting to add more, but I made myself stop, realizing it was just enough.

  • A quick draw to get in a creative mood for this new beginning of a year. I just picked what colors and themes that came natural. 30 minutes, and I’ve got something that makes me feel good, and helped me to step away from some anxiety I was feeling inside. (I’m sure that’s how that […]

  • Starting out with a graphite drawing and progressing to digital coloring.   I couldn’t choose between a black or blue background, so I’m keeping them both.     I really like how that black makes her hip and leg pop out. Bam.

  • This was a simple exercise using the line symmetry tool in Sketchbook Pro. I was trying to represent female hair in as many non-hair shapes I could imagine. I like the simplicity of this–and the view as if from behind.

  • Did a small, little unfinished figure drawing today. I enjoyed making lots of lines and just letting my brain come up with whatever it felt like. I used a reference photo for a girl in a wrap as a very loose concept. The colors in the wrap and various other squiggly lines that I seem […]

  • This guy is a T-Rex, but you knew that, right? Who doesn’t love dinosaurs? Mr. T, as I affectionately call him, is one of many elements in an epic drawing I am working on for a friend. Other elements in this drawing to come include, but are not limited to: volcanoes, meteors, and an atomic-bomb […]

  • Digital art, based off of a reference photo. “Jeane” seems like a fitting name for her. I liked playing with the “pulling brush” feature in Sketchbook Pro, and got some interesting and lively results with hair. It looks so wispy! The brightly-colored lips are for my amusement only — I like how it plays off […]

  • I got some time and some energy to draw today. I felt like focusing on getting back to building skills with a portrait. This sweet picture, named “Rosemary” gave me a ton of confidence. I was very loose and open during the experience of drawing. To enable right-brain thinking, I put a song on repeat, which […]

  •  Hi, all you lovely people. ♥ I am nearing the conclusion of the first month of portrait drawing. I haven’t drawn every day as I set out to do, travel and boat repairs interrupted some of my work flow. I also had days when there were no other circumstances to blame but myself. But, this […]

  • Day 22 – Denim Girl Digital artwork. Based on an online reference photo. I wanted to include more of the figure in the portrait drawing again. I liked the white and dark, and the clean lines. It’s interesting to note how much texture can be achieved even without lots of gradient areas. Day 23 – Darcy […]

  • Day 19 Digital artwork. I added some color for fun. I’ve been experimenting more with digital art, and I’m really enjoying it. I feel as if I am getting more familiar with the tools. I am thoroughly having fun with the newly-offered brushes by Sketchbook Pro, the software I use to make art. Day 20 […]

  • Day 10 Digital portrait, drawn in Sketchbook Pro. I played with some color. Using synthetic paint, and seeing how much I could teach myself about color work, I experimented. I am pleased with the lips and the sheen of white — I know it’s not brilliantly executed, but being able to use color and incorporate […]

  • This was a short sketch study, once again done digitally. Even though she isn’t elaborate, and she has no hair in this version, I’m pleased. The studies are going faster and more intuitively. Plus, as a bonus, after a week of small works, I get the pleasure of seeing a positive progression!
