Digital art. Short session for the day. Playing with pastels and chalks in Sketchbook Pro. Here is an in-progress work of orchids.

I got some time and some energy to draw today. I felt like focusing on getting back to building skills with a portrait. This sweet picture, named “Rosemary” gave me a ton of confidence. I was very loose and open during the experience of drawing. To enable right-brain thinking, I put a song on repeat, which […]

Hi, all you lovely people. ♥ I am nearing the conclusion of the first month of portrait drawing. I haven’t drawn every day as I set out to do, travel and boat repairs interrupted some of my work flow. I also had days when there were no other circumstances to blame but myself. But, this […]

Day 19 Digital artwork. I added some color for fun. I’ve been experimenting more with digital art, and I’m really enjoying it. I feel as if I am getting more familiar with the tools. I am thoroughly having fun with the newly-offered brushes by Sketchbook Pro, the software I use to make art. Day 20 […]

Day 14 A digital artwork. A young girl’s face, with a off-white pinkish background. The same face but with some digital brush hair for fun. Notice how it softens her.

Day 10 Digital portrait, drawn in Sketchbook Pro. I played with some color. Using synthetic paint, and seeing how much I could teach myself about color work, I experimented. I am pleased with the lips and the sheen of white — I know it’s not brilliantly executed, but being able to use color and incorporate […]

This was a short sketch study, once again done digitally. Even though she isn’t elaborate, and she has no hair in this version, I’m pleased. The studies are going faster and more intuitively. Plus, as a bonus, after a week of small works, I get the pleasure of seeing a positive progression!

The eighth day of sketching portraits. This was a short exercise for me, about 30 minutes. I used Sketchbook Pro again, as I want to get more comfortable with making traditional-looking art in digital form — it gives me so many more options for working while living on a boat — and the versatility of […]

Two more days of drawing to introduce you to. As I had thought would happen, Day 5 was not as progressive as I’d hoped. Happily, Day 6 was! There are flows to each day. It’s enough that I wake up, and get focused enough to draw — all the better when I draw — no […]

ABOUT THIS PICTURE Digital art. This is a modification of a hand-drawn portrait I made months ago called Samantha. I’ve been submitting to a lot of literary magazines lately, and have been noting some fantastic cover art. Looking back at my own work, and manipulating some colors in this (originally graphite) picture, I saw a lot of […]

ABOUT THIS PICTURE Digital art. Taken from a reference photo I took of six succulents gathered-together in a landscaped space. I liked the cascading shape. This was a quick half hour exercise, mostly learning about synthetic paint in my painting program, Sketchbook Pro. I worked at keeping the colors warm and free, but […]

This is the second round of working this picture of succulents. I originally made a less realistic version of it here. It was colorful and fun, focusing more on the bright-color aspect and less on the real, true-to-form colors of the succulent. I told myself I’d come back to work using the very same reference […]

I know of a lot of traditional artists who use paper and pen exclusively. I think that’s great. I really do. I find myself pulling out a notebook and a colorful pen or trusty graphite and getting down to business. There isn’t much that feels better, actually. The contact of utensil on paper, the movement, […]

Figures and lines. I missed looking at pictures of lovely naked people. Seeing the form, the contours, all that gorgeous stuff. After I spotted a great reference photo online, I thought why not try it out for fun? I found a picture of a woman in a bathtub. The intimacy of her, all alone, leaning […]

I’ve posted parts of this small work on my new WIP page. I’m working on keeping my hands and brain going. I’ve got lots of ideas for the upcoming year. How have things been going for you? Have you set some goals for the year ahead? Instead of setting goals this year, I’m sticking […]
